An Insider's View of a Quinceanera (Coming of Age) In Central Mexico
Frequently I get emails either calling me crazy for moving into Central Mexico or thanking me for caring for and about Mexicans. To my knowledge, I am the first researcher to permanently relocate to a rural Mexican village. Like all teachers, I feel that I get way more joy out of teaching than the students get out of my presence. Let me give you an example. July 3, 2010 was to be a really big day for our neighbor. Zitlaly Yoana Aguirre Murrieta, was to celebrate her quinceañera. Every Mexican girl looks forward to this celebration for her entire childhood. This ritual, both the mass and the social gathering afterwards, signals her transition into adulthood. It is her "coming out" party, the time when her family formally presents her to the public as a young woman.
Zitlaly has been close to us for two years because she is a sensitive young woman who volunteers helping with the equine therapy for disabled kids and adults that we offer in our yard. She lives next door to us and often keeps an eye on our therapy horses. Her older sister has been a volunteer Karate teacher in the community center were we were the coordinators of volunteers. Therefore, we were not surprised when weeks ahead of time Zitlaly asked us to help her create quinceañera invitations for 200 people. The process involved designing, photographing her and reworking endless times to get her invitations "just right" within her developing organizational experiences. During those weeks she developed confidence, as she repainted the metal fence outside her home, practiced dance steps with male and female friends in her backyard, and made sure where people would park on her special night. The transition was a joy to observe and helped us three Celtic heritage adults better understand the roots of this Mexican tradition.
Yesterday the weather reflected the monsoon season; the sky was filled with black violently moving clouds. The sky repeatedly poured forth seemingly endless amounts of moisture onto tiny corn and sorghum plants and also onto Zitlaly's quinceañera celebration. There were at least 100 people of all ages gathered under rented portable canopies sitting in chairs covered in white fabric, despite the weather, the music reverberated through our little village. The D.J.'s were inside a clear plastic square tent (to protect their equipment) that looked as big as the typical shipping containers often seen riding on the backs of commercial18-wheeled trucks. None-the-less, soaking wet celebrants danced under the stars, the rain, or any extra vinyl tarp that might still be left standing.
My family consists of three "seasoned" teachers (my hair is snow white, the two of them have gray streaks). We all thought we understood the joy of teaching, but until we came to this area in 2005 and then moved to this village in May 2008 we knew nothing of the depth of respect that the teachers of Mexican children receive as a daily expectation by parents and teachers alike. My teaching career was always Mexican children, immigrant Mexican-American children, but the roots of the culture are alive and well in Central Mexico and the depth of respect found here is remarkable.
The family bonds are equally remarkable in this developing country. When too many people live in homes with sheets where doors and windows should be, no one has heat or air conditioning, when only a handful of families have a way to heat bath water (many lack plumbed bathrooms) and windows screens are an oddity, life is hard. Death is all too common. That is why each day is lived to the fullest and each contact with another human being is a sincere exchange of kindness.
Last night I danced with a 5 year old girl who lost her mother to cancer a few months ago, a 4 year old boy who is being raised by grandma because her mother needs to travel far to find work and13 year old boy who is totally deaf. I danced with many others whose day-to-day life touches mine in a way far more intimately than is found in most developed countries. My neighbors know me with such depth because they care to know me. I know them because they have honored me by allowing me inside their world. They have opened their hearts to my family and me. They always invite me to family events, they listen and laugh when I walk into their classrooms and teach English, even the teenagers wave back as I pass them on the dirt roads and every single one of them is my teacher of Spanish.
I must excuse myself now because it is Sunday and nearly 9am. At 9am on Sundays a neighbor will bring me fresh eggs from her hens and homemade cheese from her kitchen. I will make a purchase right at my front gate, a local purchase of her outstanding handcrafted food from her domestic animals and we will have a social exchange also. This coming week I will feed my family food that both my neighbor lady created and food from my own organic veggie garden.
Although I appreciate those outside my world thinking that I am helping this community, the fact is it is they who are making my mature years the absolute best years of my entire life.

You Really Can Get Dressed in 10 Minutes Or Less
Everyone has done it, even you. You go to get ready for your day, evening, or special event and everything that could go wrong does go wrong! The dress you reach for has a ripped hem. "Oh, that's right! I was going to fix that!" you say out loud to yourself. You reach for a pair of pants, slip them on and they are too tight in the waist. "How did that happen?" you say. Your frustration and disappointment in yourself starts climbing, quickly. The next item you pull from your closet is a pretty blouse. "I'm sure I must have something to go with this," you say. After ten minutes of pulling things out, trying things on, tossing them on the bed or floor, you give up on the blouse. Now you're desperate! Does this sound familiar?
Ready to stop the madness? Ready to make getting dressed one of the most non-stressful events of the day? I've got some steps you can take to make your world look rosy again. I don't want you to have to struggle one more moment. Let's get started!
Even though you're busy and may think you don't have time to pre-plan your outfits, just remember all that wasted time you've experienced in the past and where that got you. Use that precious time more wisely by looking out a few days ahead. What's coming up? What do you need outfits for? Write down the events and the categories and put those great outfits together now before you're pressed for time.
For example, maybe you need three outfits for work related activities and two outfits for weekend fun events that are coming up. Pull out a portable rolling rack if you have one. If not, just lay the items on the bed and start pulling out possible choice pieces. The key is to just focus on five outfits.
As you assemble each outfit check out the following:
1. Are the items ready to wear or do they need to go to alterations, be laundered first, or does a simple button need to be secured in a sweater? Take some notes and plan the follow through.

In the 1980s - the Reagan years, the ERA had failed and feminists were dubbed Feminazis by some. Though, as always, men were being honored for their contributions to society, the feminists who'd changed America were practically disdained.
The NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund a thriving reality, was excited about an oral history project for the Schlesinger library involving the history of NOW and Betty Friedan. To a woman, they expressed a wish to reunite. With the help from New Feminist Theater, and the Women's Health Movement, a committee was organized to undertake the planning of a reunion.
Remembering how men met regularly with their war buddies, a group of women involved in the early years of the Women's Movement asked themselves to think beyond a single reunion and toward an organization to document the Movement's history and inspire future feminists.
In May 1993, a first reunion was organized in honor of Catherine East of Washington D.C., the woman Betty Friedan called "the midwife of the feminist movement." Over 250 came to New York to honor the beloved Catherine. After that glorious occasion, Catherine and D.C. attorney Mary Eastwood, both founders of NOW, wanted to honor other Pioneers, starting with Congresswoman Martha Griffiths, who made it possible to include "sex" in Title VII; Virginia Allen, Director of the Women's Bureau under President Nixon; and Phineas Indritz, the attorney who had advised feminists. It is hoped that these events will continue to offer support and camaraderie to pioneers of feminism's Second Wave and provide the recognition, respect and honor they so richly deserve.

Focus on acquiring another notch in your spiritual belt by praying for a greater connection with God through Christ, so that you can hear His directive clearly and follow His guidance to your treasures.
Jewel #2: To unlock the treasures, you must face the truth
God has given us a little piece of Himself, a spiritual gift that abides within us. John 16:13-15 says that this gift is the spirit of truth and he is our friend. This friend, the spiritual gift that is on the inside of us, will take us by the hand and guide us into all truth. He won't be telling us about himself, but he will be communicating the truth about the things of God.
If we'll be honest with ourselves, we'll admit that sometimes we don't want to hear the truth. We don't want to face the fact that we've got some funkiness going on that needs to be addressed. We don't want to see the truth about our baggage because we don't want to change.
God promises in Isaiah 45:3 that He will give us treasures that are hidden in the dark and riches that are in secret places, but if you are blind and refuse to see the stuff that is holding you back, then you will be blind to the good stuff that has your name on it as well. You won't be able to see the forest for the trees.
The Father knows where your future husband is right this very moment. He knows exactly where there's an exciting, fulfilling job opportunity that has your name on it. God is not playing games with your life. The Spirit of Truth guides, it doesn't push or shove. God is constantly telling us through the spirit where to go, what to do, and how to do it. He isn't clandestine, but we need to understand that His ways are not our ways. In order to hear Him, we have to get on board with the truth-the truth about where we are in our own commitment to Christ.
You have a responsibility to put yourself in check and deal honestly with your stuff. Listen to what God is saying about the attitudes, behaviors, and emotions that you need to address within your own inner being. As Christian Women, we need encouragement in this area because we often translate God's correction into self-condemnation. We begin to feel unworthy and depressed because we think that God is angry with us.
Heavenly Father doesn't want you to feel bad about yourself. He wants to correct you, because correction leads to power! Combing through to do a little tweaking is a process of life and growth.
So don't resist the process. Listen to the spirit within, and yes, listen to others who speak the truth and sometimes tell you what you don't want to hear. Your willingness to look in the mirror is the kind of eye-opening awareness that leads to spiritual growth. It sends the message that you are prepared and willing to hear what God wants you to hear, to see what He wants you to see, and to do what He wants you to do.
Jewel #3: Have faith in the process
There are no tricks, or gimmicks to spirituality. Right this moment you have everything you need to fulfill your destiny in Christ and achieve all the success you are capable of conceiving, but getting to this place is a process and your involvement is crucial.
We are here on this earth to learn spiritual lessons, lessons that will help us to become the embodiment of Jesus Christ. The bible tells us that this is an integral part of God's plan for us. Heavenly Father desires that our lives are filled to the brim with power, faith, and love. He wants us to understand how to demonstrate these qualities so that we can manifest blessings, and at the same time we can BE a blessing in the same powerful way that Christ did. Then we will be in the prime position to share with others and give God the glory He deserves.
Have faith that He truly does desire the best for you-really He does. He wants you to overcome every obstacle, every fear, and doubt so that you have firsthand experience of His miraculous love, but you can't do it your way. It has to be His way, because His way is the way of love.
Jesus Christ tells us in Matthew 7:7 that if we ask, it will be given to us; if we seek, we will find, and if we knock, it will be opened to us. This is God's guarantee, and He never, ever breaks His Word. The answers to our questions-the blessings we seek-the door to both is always before us and we must choose to open it.
God has designed a process for receiving spiritual growth and blessings, and it works! That process requires that we grow in spiritual knowledge.
Spiritual knowledge is the key to growing in our relationship with God through Jesus Christ, and it is most definitely the key to learning to manifest the blessings we desire through faith. The choice to know and grow in this knowledge is ever before us, but we have to want it more than anything else, and we have to be relentless in our pursuit of it.
Begin to seek out the knowledge that will position you for spiritual growth and abundance.
