Women occupy key roles in many businesses. This status has been accomplished in recent years because women learned how to adapt to survive.
Society, during the end of the 20th century, was not as directed on encouraging professional and business women as it is today. Women did it anyhow. Those 'doers' are the ones who manage family and household. Today, a new stimulus, based on need, is forcing greater female adaptation.
Statistics document women starting business in unprecedented numbers. As a result, new trends are emerging in the world which reflect the influence of women in business. Over 23 million people (more than 15% ) are employed by U.S. women. Businesses steered by women generate more than $3 Trillion annually, roughly equal to the 5th highest GNP viewed globally.
Some of the credit for the new phenomenon goes to the grants which have long recognized the gender disparities in the economy. That gap still exists but is starting to close.
Why is this happening? The trend is reflective of both the pleasure and the pain principles working overtime.
Women have an even greater need (the pain) to be financially secure and independent. Satisfying that need is pride inducing and worth more than solid gold (the pleasure).
Nuclear families are no longer the norm. Single parent families are common. Self reliance is a survival necessity driven by economic times. The drive is further fueled by the fact that in traditional employment a women's average salary is still estimated at 75% of men's.
The glove was thrown a number of years ago. Current businesses starts by women reflect the not unexpected response.
Women are not creating business to prove their equality with men. They are doing so because they need to, have to, want to, and equality be da--ed!
At the same time, women's work load has not been reduced. Women still have the burden of supporting families, parenting and educating children. Community involvement still reveals strong female participation.
The ability to multi-task and service all of these areas displays an evolving trend that is likely to be seen more and more. Someday it may be a norm, rather than a novelty.
The flexibility for women business owners juggling all of these areas is the reason that home businesses have a special appeal for women.
Women have naturally utilized the skills in these areas in their 'traditional' jobs. Think about it: The skills needed to be successful in business include; strong communication, financial management, discipline and perseverance.
None of these are new for today's women. The skills are just be adapting to service what is needed now to survive on many levels.
The term 'housewife' may someday be eliminated from common usage. Perhaps it can be replaced with "Home Business CEO," or "Executive Multi-Manager." LOL.
Whatever the new lingo becomes, women's current business activities, especially new home business start-ups, portend well for economic recovery. It is a heavy duty kick start!
